I. Hate. Shaving. My. Legs.
And I don’t think I’m alone! So, when the lovely ladies at SmoothSkin offered to send me over a SmoothSkin Bare IPL Hair Removal Device with the promise that after just 4 weeks I’d never have to shave my legs again, I jumped for joy.
I have to say, I was sceptical about this device. Could it really remove all my leg hair permanently after just four weeks of treatment? Apparently, it can. Well, not remove it completely but it has definitely reduced grow back time and how much leg hair actually grows back. IPL is aimed to destroy the cycle of hair growth using short pulses of light. After shaving your legs (or underarms, or bikini line, or boyfriend’s back) you apply the device to all areas of your desired hairless region, and bam – it begins to kill your leg hair!
I received the device on the 8th of July and started using it pretty much from the get-go. SmoothSkin suggest you do a test patch first and leave it 24 hours just to make sure that you don’t have any bad reactions to the very intense light. I did that test patch on my leg and waited the 24 hours but luckily, I had no reaction, and therefore decided to do the full treatment the very next day. It’s very time consuming to do both of your legs so I suggest getting some Netflix or YouTube going in the background while you do it. I was watching Gilmore Girls (again!) while I did mine!
I usually shave my legs 1-3 times a week and therefore, that’s how many times a week I decided to do the IPL treatment. On the first week I saw no real results – but I wasn’t expecting to. The hair was growing back at the same pace, at the same thickness and darkness. The only difference was that my right arm was starting to ache like crazy because of having to keep it elevated for so long while doing the treatment. I wasn’t disappointed. Nevertheless, she persisted.
After about my 6th or 7th time using the device, I started to notice that my leg hair was taking way longer to grow back than usual. Even Johnny was impressed and asked me if I could start using it on his back (apparently back hair is a real issue for men and is very tickly)! I was already pleased! Two weeks in and already I was having to shave my legs far, far less was a massive plus. Usually, after 24 hours of shaving my legs would be scratchy and stubbly again but I noticed that I wasn’t getting stubbly for three days after my shave, and only after 5 days did I even consider shaving my legs again.
The results for this week were pretty similar to last. I was shaving my legs less and therefore doing the treatment less but I was still keeping up with using my SmoothSkin device – and still watching many, many episodes of Gilmore Girls while I did it. It is a very time consuming process, taking around 30 minutes to do your legs, and then an additional ten for other areas. Time consuming, but in my opinion, worth it. I noticed this week that the hair that was growing back was a lot thinner, and much less dark. Because I’m brunette, my leg hair often is black when it grows back – especially with the British weather meaning my legs don’t see a lot of sun! However, now it’s a light brown when it grows back and is nowhere near as coarse.
The fourth week is over now and I’m loving what I’m seeing. I think with a few more weeks, I won’t be seeing any regrowth at all. I have to say, I was extremely sceptical about IPL treatments: I was worried it would hurt; I was worried it would cause skin damage; I was worried that it was going to be a complete waste of time. However, this device has changed my mind. It’s an expensive way to remove hair, but if you really, really hate shaving your legs, and you want to splurge on a method of hair removal that you know is safe and know works, then I’d really recommend this one.
Have you tried any IPL devices? What did you think of them?
