Using Travel To Beat Anxiety

This time last year I was in Gran Canaria, lapping up the sunshine and lapping up (too many!) cocktails. Going on holiday in December can be a risky business but I am fully supportive of getting some winter sun, despite especially because anxiety is such an issue for me in the winter. Here’s why I think the Canaries are the best place for it…
It’s really warm!
Even during mid-December, the Canary Islands still see temperatures of 25-30 degrees celsius a day which is a far cry from the temperatures you get in the UK this time of year (it was minus one when I left my house today – yikes!). Because of how southernly the Canaries are (they’re just off of the coast of Africa) they get much warmer climates than the rest of Europe sees during this time. My dad frequents the Canaries quite often during December – it’s why Johnny and I decided to go last year! – and from experience he says Tenerife is very windy around this year. As Gran Canaria is the most southernly of the Canaries, it’s got the warmest climate and why I’d pick it for some winter sun. You can book your sun-soaked trip to Gran Canaria on
It’s really cheap!
Part of the reason we decided to go away in December is that it’s essentially really cheap. Because it’s not really a peak time to travel you can find some amazing bargains around this time of year. All in all, our trip to Gran Canaria (including flights, all inclusive hotel stay and airport transfers) was around £400 each which ain’t bad. And, the holiday pretty much paid for itself. Our flight home was delayed by 8 hours and so we claimed compensation from EasyJet and got over £800 back for our troubles. This may seem cheeky but when booking your flights to Gran Canaria, book them with EasyJet because they have a reputation of being really late out of Gran Canaria’s airport – I think something like 2 of 5 of their flights from there actually leave on time – and likely you’ll be delayed too and can also get yourself some sweet, sweet compensation.
It’s really beautiful!
Johnny and I had the best time in Gran Canaria as our setting was so lovely. We stayed in Taurito which is a short coach ride from the beautiful port of Mogan. Every Saturday, Mogan has a market so we were incredibly lucky to head to Mogan while we were out there and experience the market. It was one of the prettiest little coastal towns I’ve ever been to and if you’re thinking of heading to Gran Canaria for some winter sun then I would definitely recommend Mogan. But wherever you stay I doubt you’ll be disappointed. As a volcanic island, it’s full of stunning scenery wherever you look. We had some amazing views from our balcony over the town of Taurito and the cliffs and the sea. It was breath-taking.
We had the best time in Gran Canaria last year when we went. It was honestly the best holiday I’ve ever had and I definitely recommend visiting – if not in the winter then at any time. Have you ever been to Gran Canaria? What did you make of it?

I never even though of the Canary Islands as a good holiday destination but it sounds absolutely lovely. That view from your hotel sounds absolutely beautiful. It is definitely going on my travel list now.

Haven’t been to Gran Canaria yet but my mom treated me to one week Fuerteventura last December and it was great! Canary Islands are kinda underrated in my opinion! xxx

I've wanted to visit the Canary Islands for a while now because I know absolutely loads of other people that have!

I personally really love going away later on in the year – it makes a nice change from the UK and sort of gets the last bit of summer out of my system before we dive straight into winter. This year I visited Turkey and Greece in October which was a really nice change of pace!

It sounds like you had a great time! And nice tip about the compensation. I personally love the cold in winter, it makes me feel all cosy and ready for christmas so my ideal winter trip is more likely to be skiing or something but those temperatures sound great for people wanting a bit of sun. x
