I made a joke about doing this post on Twitter because I really didn’t think it would be interesting (receipts, snacks and tampons – am I right?) but I did a poll and it was a resounding ‘yes’ – you all want to know what’s in my bag…
Let’s start by introducing the bag itself. This is the Radley Liverpool Street Large Tote in Black and it was a 20th birthday present from Johnny. It was totally unexpected as a gift and I burst into tears when I opened it. My mum has always had a Radley handbag as long as I can remember and has always bought me Radley purses. I had never owned a nice handbag before – all my bags were either from Primark or H&M – and so I was so chuffed when I opened this. It’s a great size, perfect for taking my laptop to uni and holding all my snacks. It has a large zip-up compartment in the centre and then two roomy pockets on each size. It’s perfect for everyday as it can hold so much but doesn’t look like it: it’s kind of like Mary Poppins’ bag in a way! Not to mention it also has a little dog on it – and we all know how I feel about dogs!
One thing I always carry with me in my bag is my purse. Again, this is another Radley item. My mum bought this for me for Christmas 2016 and it is the first Radley purse that was mine new and not a hand-me-down from my mum. I’ve had Radley purses for as long as I can remember and I really love them. This one is mainly white and pink and sadly you can’t buy this pattern anymore but this one is quite similar. I 100% have more cards than I need and so maybe I’d like a bigger purse next time around but for now, I’m quite happy with the one I’ve got. I also keep my Oyster Card in my bag because I travel around London everyday. I bought this really sweet Cath Kidston-style wallet for it when I moved to London in September 2016 from eBay from a seller called KristinaRose80 and she still makes them and they’re all so pretty, handmade and so unique. If you’re in the market for a cute card holder, I definitely recommend taking a look at Kristina’s shop.
Most of the little things that could get lost in my bag I keep in this little pouch that you get when you make a Glossier order. It’s perfect for using as a handbag tidy and I would definitely recommend doing this if you have a larger hand bag and things tend to get lost in it. In this pouch I keep some tampons and sanitary towels, an iPhone charger, a mattifying face powder and a powder brush, my trusty Elizabeth Arden hand cream, my Apple headphones and some painkillers. I deem all of these to be hand bag essentials. I also used to have some plasters in there but I seem to have used them all – time for a restock! Having this little pouch is really handy for me and I can’t believe I didn’t use it before. With nearly all my essentials in one area it doesn’t just make finding what I need easier but also switching out your handbags is a complete dream because everything you need is just in one place.
Something else that I have far too many of in my hand bag is lipsticks. When I emptied my handbag for this post, however, there were only three in there which, for me, I think is pretty good going. The three I had in there were a Sephora Matte Lipstick in a brown-nude colour, ‘Guess’ from ColourPop which is a almost black purple and MAC Modesty which is a very pink nude. I’m not sure why I have these lipsticks in particular in my hand bag as I don’t remember wearing any of them very recently but they were in there and this is an ‘honest’ what’s in my bag at the end of the day. Because this is a pretty new hand bag I don’t have lipsticks in there that are 4 years old and kind of manky – you’ll be pleased to know that all of these are in date!
I always carry snacks around with me. Who knows if you’ll get stranded somewhere (like on the tube or at the bus stop) and need sustenance. My snacks of choice at the moment are Oats So Simple Morning Bars which, by the way, taste incredible. They just taste like porridge with dried fruit and I always keep one in my bag because they’re great if you miss breakfast – which I really try hard not to do! – or if I’m just feeling snacky and need something to munch on. I also like to keep sweets in my bag. I’m not really a big fan of gum or mints so this is my substitution for that. I love these rhubarb and custard ones that are from Aldi. They have the best flavour and are really cheap – I mean like, dirt cheap – which is always a bonus when you’re poor like me.
Finally, the newest edition to my handbag is my FujiFilm Instax Mini. I got this for Christmas and since then I always slip it into my bag in case I come across the perfect shot that I just want to keep forever. Because you only get 10 shots per film, I don’t often use this when I’m about because I don’t want to have to carry extra film with me but I always carry it because you just never know when you’ll come across a scene so cute that a polaroid picture is the only option. Once they’re taken, I just pop them into my purse to develop them. Often I’ll forget about them and then when I next open my purse they’re like little surprise memories.
